Dyslexia Day

Approximately 10-15% of children have dyslexia. However, children with dyslexia often do not meet or know other children with dyslexia due to a significant number of children with dyslexia not being accurately identified at an early age. As a result, children with dyslexia can feel isolated, alone and as though no one else understands what they are going through.

The HMHK Dyslexia Day aims to connect children with dyslexia. Young people with dyslexia will benefit from meeting and connecting with other children with dyslexia. The aim of the program is to help young people to talk about their feelings and experiences in a safe environment in order to normalise their feelings and experiences. The children will become a support network for each other that can continue after the program ends.

The Dyslexia Day for primary school students will focus on:

  • What is dyslexia?
  • What does dyslexia mean to me? Sharing how dyslexia has impacted my life.
  • Exploring our strengths (feeling good about the things we are great at)
  • How can I make school easier for me?
  • Assertiveness skills to manage comments from other children about their reading difficulties
  • Exploring electronic resources that can be used to help me at home and at school
