Gina Villar

Gina is a Psychology Intern who works part-time in our practice offering psychological assessment and treatment services to children and adolescents. Gina has a warm and caring nature and is able to connect with children and parents with ease. She is a provisionally registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA; Registration number: PSY0002092811). Gina initially joined the HMHK team as a provisional psychologist on practicum, where she was supervised and trained by Principal Psychologist, Birgitta Österberg. Gina is currently undertaking her final year of internship to become a generally registered psychologist and Birgitta is her primary supervisor.

Following completion of a Bachelor of Arts (Psych) at Macquarie University in 1988, Gina worked for several years in the welfare services sector co-ordinating respite care and support services for children and young adults with disabilities and their families. When Gina’s own (now teenage) children were small, she returned to uni and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Psychology) (1st Class Hons). She was awarded the Australian Psychological Society Prize for the graduate with the most distinguished record in an Honours year in Psychology from Charles Sturt University (CSU). Gina’s PhD was undertaken through a UPA Scholarship at the University of Sydney, and awarded in 2013. Gina has authored several publications in international forensic psychology journals and has presented her work at conferences. In 2017, Gina completed a Master of Professional Psychology at the University of New England as part of the 5 + 1 pathway to registration as a psychologist.

Gina has previously undertaken casual teaching at the University of Sydney and casual and permanent teaching at CSU, including supervision of psychology Honours and Masters students’ research projects. Gina has taught several subjects including Social Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics, Psychology and the Legal System, and Psychology of Substance Abuse. She currently holds an Adjunct Lecturer position in the School of Psychology at CSU and she continues to mentor some of her previous students.
