Play Skills Social Skills

The Play Skills Social Skills Group allows children to develop the more complex social skills needed for developing and maintaining early friendships with their peers as the begin big school. Play Skills is a fun, interactive programme where children develop and practise their social skills whilst enjoying positive experiences with children their age. This programme is aimed at children with speech or language difficulties, and helps them to better understand early social situations, and learn how to communicate their needs, and self-regulate their social behaviours. The programme includes content such as:

  • Understanding verbal and non-verbal communication needed for interactions with peers and adults
  • Developing effective communication skills to initiate conversation and play with their peers
  • Identifying effective behaviours for initiating and maintaining play
  • Developing social problem-solving skills
  • Identifying emotions during play and recognising how they feel in their body
  • Working as part of a group to solve problems
  • Understanding wants versus needs
  • Understanding the right time versus the wrong time
