School readiness

We offer two transition-to-school group programs to help children (aged 4 to 5) entering Kindergarten. Our principal clinician, Birgitta Osterberg, designed both programs to ensure that children gain relevant and appropriate knowledge and skills about the school environment, classroom and social situations specific to schools so that children can confidently start school.

Social skills for school

The purpose of the program is to prepare children for social situations specific to their age and to the school environment. We aim to increase children’s ability to understand rules and directions, introduce themselves, join in play, share and take turns, make mistakes and persevere, win and lose with a positive attitude, be polite and kind to others and bounce back when things go wrong.

School readiness

The purpose of the program is to prepare children about to commence Kindergarten for their school, classroom and playground environments. The program focuses on the following areas of school readiness:

  • Interpreting and following typical school and classroom rules
  • Listening to instructions and following directions
  • Following rules to be a good member of a group (eg. how to listen and when to speak)
  • Meeting and making new friends and maintaining our friendships
  • Practising having recess, lunch and ‘News’
  • Learning common group games that are played at school
  • Being introduced to people at school who can support them
  • Problem solving common situations/issues that may arise at school with other children and themselves

By the end of the program we create a social story for each child and provide parent information hand-outs that include information about the topics above as well as with information specific to each child’s school, teacher (where possible), daily routine and uniform.
