Transition to School Group

Transition to School Group

The Transition to High-School Group prepares children for the high-school experience, including navigating the school grounds, classroom, assessments and homework, and friendships. The programme combines learning with encouraging children to interact with others who share similar or different concerns and excitements about the next stage of life. The children work together to identify helpful strategies, reduce worry, and increase confidence as they increase their awareness of the high-school experience. The programme includes content such as:

  • Learning the different ways of introducing themselves to people and peers
  • Understanding how to initiate and maintain conversations and play
  • Understanding how to follow instructions, share, and take turns
  • Understanding personal space and body language when playing
  • Developing coping skills when things go wrong
  • Persevering and learning from mistakes
  • Developing effective communication skills to identify and communicate needs
  • Learning how to be careful and stay safe when playing in different environments
  • Working as part of a group to solve problems
  • Preparing for the classroom environment, including using a school bag, sitting at a desk, and understanding recess and lunch times.
