Adaptive functioning

Adaptive functioning assessments measure children’s ability to perform everyday tasks and function within the community. Some of the skills that may be evaluated are: communication, self-help, self-direction, health and safety, social and school/work. Adaptive functioning assessment results can assist parents and teachers to identify children’s strengths and weaknesses and to develop individualised life skills programs.

The benefits of having an adaptive functioning assessment are to:

  • Determine the level of severity of an intellectual impairment
  • Comprehensively evaluate an individual
  • Identify an individual’s strengths and weaknesses
  • Develop a life skills program for an individual
  • Monitor an individual’s progress over time
  • Provide advice to parents and teachers to help ensure children’s learning needs are met
  • Access school-based and home-based funding
  • Prevent a child from experiencing negative outcomes at school, including poor results, disruptive behaviour patterns, school avoidance and refusal, low self esteem and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression

Assessment Process

We use the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System - Third edition (ABAS-III) to assess adaptive functioning in individuals aged from birth to 89 years.

This adaptive functioning assessment measures:

  • Communication – skills needed to communicate with others
  • Self-help – skills needed for personal care
  • Self-direction – skills needed for self control, responsibility and independence
  • Home living – skills needed in the home setting
  • Community use – skills needed to function in the community
  • Health and safety – skills needed to remain safe and well, skills needed to respond to illness and injury
  • Leisure – skills to plan and engage in recreational activities
  • Social – skills to get along with and interact with others
  • School/Work – skills needed to function in these settings
